Engage, Compel, Inspire: Advanced Media in Moodle
Abstract: The use of Moodle for learning management has often been restricted to transferring and storing student data: identification, scores, reports, and logs. Moodle, however, is also a very reliable platform for delivering dynamic media. This presentation looks at the potential for using extended media in Moodle to create a more compelling, personal and effective learning environment.
The presentation looks at two case studies: one involving a digital cultural exchange between students in Korea and Dubai, and the other involving students in an entry level communication course. In both cases, voice technology, video, and the immersive 3D environment of Second Life are used to create an innovative, compelling learning environment in which users are provided with a genuine, meaningful community of practice. In addition, the innovative Sloodle module, a link between Second Life and Moodle, will be introduced and demonstrated.

Biography: Chris Surridge is an educator living and working in South Korea. He is currently teaching at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He has founded and developed The eLearning Project and CALLSIG.ORG, both of which support and advance the use of Computer Assisted Language Learning.
